Artist's Description
Grey horse out in a snow storm, wishing he could find more shelter. Gray is common in many breeds. Today, about one horse in 10 carries the mutation for graying with age. The vast majority of Lipizzaners are gray, as are the majority of Andalusian horses. Many breeds of French draft horse such as the Percheron and Boulonnais are often gray as well. Gray is also found among Welsh Ponies, Thoroughbreds, and American Quarter Horses. All of these breeds have common ancestry in the Arabian horse. In particular, all gray Thoroughbreds descend from a horse named Alcock's Arabian, a gray born in 1700. The gray coat color makes up about 3% of Thoroughbreds.
Gray also occurs in spotted horses such as pintos or Appaloosas, but its effects wash out the contrast of the markings of these patterns. For this reason, some color breed registries refuse or cancel registration of gray horses.
About Jean Walker
Hi my name is Jean; I am a self-taught artist who works from my studio at home, in oil paint on canvas, My main subjects being Landscapes and Seascapes. I have recently undertaken portraiture, of which I am thoroughly enjoying and a new and challenging area for myself. I also have an extremely keen interest in Photography and I often paint from my collection of pictures, they prove an invaluable source of reference on wet and windy days when it is impossible or impractical to paint al-fresco. In 2002 i decided to expand my vocabulary in art by enrolling into Lichfield & Tamworth College for a 2-year Art course to obtain my A-Level. In 2004 I was accepted into Wolverhampton University, graduating in 2007 with a B.A (hons) in Fine Art...
